Masmak Fort: The Historic Heart of Riyadh

Updated: 2 days ago

Also known as Masmak Palace, the palace is so named because of the thickness of its floors and side walls.

Here's a brief summary of the Masmak Fort's history: it was built in 1895 in the northeastern part of Old Riyadh and was constructed by Prince Abdul Rahman bin Dabaan during the reign of Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Ali Al Rasheed. Its historical significance was cemented in 1902 when Abdul Aziz Al Saud used it as a strategic location to retake Riyadh from the Al Rashid family. The palace, whose original door still bears the mark of the year of the spear that was used to kill Amil bin Rashid, was later used as a storehouse for ammunition and weapons until it was restored. In 1995, it was converted into a museum to commemorate the unification of Saudi Arabia by Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud and was inaugurated by King Salman bin Abdulaziz as Emir of Riyadh.
