Saudi Founding Day 2024: A Celebration of Beginnings

Saudi Founding Day 2024

What is Saudi Founding Day?  The Saudi Founding Day which falls on the 22nd of February is a special time for Saudis to come together and celebrate their national identity. It is a day of pride and unity, and a reminder of the strong foundation on which Saudi Arabia is built.

History of Saudi Arabia Founding Day

Saudi Founding Day history can be traced back to the founding of the First Saudi State called the Emirate of Diriyah in 1727 by Imam Muhammad bin Saud. Imam Muhammad bin Saud was a religious leader and a skilled politician. He allied with the powerful Al-Muraydi tribe, which helped him to expand his territory and influence.

The First Saudi State expanded rapidly under the leadership of Imam Muhammad bin Saud and his successors. By the early 19th century, the First Saudi State controlled most of the Arabian Peninsula. However, the First Saudi State ended in 1818, when the Ottoman Empire conquered it.

The Second Saudi State called the Emirate of Nejd was founded in 1824 by Turki bin Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Saud, a grandson of Imam Muhammad bin Saud. The Second Saudi State was smaller than the First Saudi State, but it was still a powerful force in the Arabian Peninsula. The Second Saudi State ended in 1891 when the Al Rashid dynasty conquered it.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was established in 1932 by Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman al Saud, also known as Ibn Saud. Ibn Saud was a descendant of Imam Muhammad bin Saud. Ibn Saud united the various tribes and territories of the Arabian Peninsula under his banner, creating the modern-day Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Founding Day was established in 2022 to commemorate the founding of the First Saudi State in 1727. It is a relatively new holiday, but it has quickly become one of the most important national holidays in the Saudi calendar. Saudi Founding Day is a time for Saudis to celebrate their national identity and reflect on the country's progress over the past three centuries.

To truly immerse yourself in the rich history of Diriyah and the broader tapestry of Saudi Arabia, there's nothing quite like embarking on a journey to the Kingdom itself. The Saudi Founding Day celebrated on February 22nd, is a newly established public holiday that honours the dawn of Saudi Arabia's historical journey. It stands as a separate celebration, rather than a replacement for Saudi National Day, which celebrates the country's unification in 1932.
